Serious and life-threatening medical emergencies often cause oxygen to be depleted in the body.

The HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen program focuses on how to administer emergency medical oxygen to breathing and non-breathing persons using oxygen delivery systems.

The HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen program teaches participants how to:

  • Assess for oxygen deficiency in an emergency situation

  • Observe the signs and symptoms of mild, moderate, and severe hypoxia

  • Correctly use a pulse oximeter

  • Set up an emergency medical oxygen delivery system and monitor SpO2

  • Help responsive and unresponsive persons

  • Provide medical oxygen in an emergency to an adult/child and infant using an appropriate bag-mask device (BLS providers only)
